RIP Ted Kennedy

Akash Posted In: News

riptedkennedy

The hour has drawn where the United States must bid farewell to the last living Kennedy of the third generation. Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy has passed away from brain cancer and “the Lion of the Senate” will rest in time forever. Kennedy was the youngest of the third generation and experienced the tragic assassinations of two of his brothers at the hands of the shameless “Big Brother” lurking in the shadows and now trying to retain power from Obama who is just trying to make things right. Kennedy was a senior among the Democratic party for years and an activist in the name of choice and freedom. He is a loss to the democratic party and a defeat for Obama’s side as the right-wing is trying to tear him down right now. He will be missed dearly. Still missing Michael…

Over the weekend, the first teaser for Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to The Dark Knight, Inception, dropped with prints of Inglourious Basterds. I didn’t get treated to the teaser on the big screen but it has landed on the internet this morning and it does not disappoint. The story deals with different realities and the shifting of time and gravity. Details on what the film is about have slowly leaked out but I’d rather wait to discover the magic when the film hits next summer. Check out the trailer after the break.

Michael Moore’s revealing look at the financial meltdown which had hindered our great nation and the ethics of the banks and Wall St. has a new trailer which arrived yesterday evening. Capitalism: A Love Story looks to be more of the same with Moore hunting executives and politicians while also making for quality, emotionally stirring documentation. I always like it when Moore drops a new bomb on the right-wing elite and this looks to be a full-fledged attack at the bastards who have destroyed the American dream for a lot of people. Check out the trailer on the next page, the movie is due in theaters on September 23rd.

The world awoke this morning to find the first trailer for the hugely anticipated new IMAX 3D film from James Cameron, Avatar. A lot has been said before and after the trailer’s release as the majority is split in its awe and disappointment. I personally am hella excited because I never had such high expectations as far as the visual effects are concerned and the major anger I’m hearing is from people who assumed that glasses wont be required; alas our budget constraints have not allowed for that technology to be introduced to 2,000+ IMAX theaters. None the less, the CGI is incredible considering they used very little practical effects and though the term ‘game changer’ may not be confirmed until after the release of the film, I’m thinking it’s on the right track. There are shots of the Navi (alien species) under extremely flourecent lighting where you can see the cracks under the feet and the pores in their faces; these creatures truly are living beings and not soulless dummies as most CG characters have been thus far. The trailer roars adventure, romance, and magic; this is the epic I have been waiting for from an auteur who knows how to make quality entertainment without raping the audiences’ intelligence. Avatar sets its tale in the future where man has colonized across space and they invade an indigenous planet seeking its resources. Within this war for succession lies a romance which echos Pocahontas and John Smith’s quest for understanding. I will be attending AVATAR DAY tomorrow and I’ll have a full rundown of the 15 min I’ll see so stay tuned for more. UPDATE: Nikki Finke is reporting that Shutter Island has been delayed til February 19th, 2010. Sad news.

An evil poster has arrived for the upcoming Martin Scorsese thriller starring Leo DiCaprio, Shutter Island, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. It goes to show you how terrible American marketing can be compared to the brilliant artistic strides the Japanese take. You can find the American one sheet here and the amazing Japanese version after the jump. Shutter Island is due in theaters on October 2nd.

Fish Tank trailer

Akash Posted In: News

fishtank_trl1

A visceral trailer has arrived for Cannes 09 Jury winner Fish Tank directed by Andrea Arnold. The film is about 15 year old aspiring dancer Mia, who’s life changes when her mother brings home a new boyfriend played by Michael Fassbender. The lead role of Mia is garnering much acclaim for first-timer Katie Jarvis and apparently the chemistry on-screen between her and Fassbender is stirring. Check out the trailer after the break.

REVIEW: District 9

Akash Posted In: Reviews

Birthed from the ashes of the posthumous Halo film which director Neil Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson were set to deliver a few years back, but due to budget constraints and Fox’s attempt to mold their own (possible conservative driven) picture; Blomkamp and Jackson organized $30 million to create the universe of District 9, a sociopolitical examination of apartheid in South Africa and the social barriers the world faces through the eyes of a refuge camp of aliens who have no way of returning home as their depowered ship is harbored over the shanty town known as District 9. Secluding them to their boundaries is Multi-National United (MNU) a blackwater type contractor perusing the means to enhance their military complex through the weaponry provided by the alien beings known as “prawns” as they look like a form of shell-fish. These heavy handed themes of politics and industry dominate the first half of the film which is embodied as a documentary at first, but after our lead character Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is contaminated during an inspection, the film transformers into a chase flick and leaves all it’s theories on a society on the brink of chaos in the dust that settles after hardcore violence and action involving laser zappers and mech-suits through the barren desert with the sun glistening off split oil.

A trailer has hit the net for Werner Herzog’s second film due this year (after Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans); My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. With this picture Herzog will be delving into the horror genre, a territory he hasn’t ventured into since Nosferatu in ‘79. It looks in vein to the digital work Lynch has been doing for the past few years. The story deals with art reflecting reality as an aspiring theater actor in a Greek tragedy kills his mother in the play and in reality; the mystery unfolds through intricate flashbacks. The trailer feels quite awkward in regard to the fact that this is Herzog making a very still, quiet thriller which contains mythological themes. Give it a look after the break.

Roman Polanski returns to form with a darker and more sexually fueled venture into the dark waters of politics and conspiracy with The Ghost. The teaser doesn’t show much but the IMDB plot summary said that it’s about a former ghostwriter for the Prime Minister of England who runs into some problems and must uncover a mystery. Would like to see another fuller trailer, but it’s Polanski so I would expect something grand. Continue reading to check out the trailer for Cannes 09 Golden Palm winner The White Ribbon, directed by Michael Haneke who did the intense and puzzling kidnapping thriller Caché.
